Disillusioned takes place a little over 100 years after the climactic Battle of Brandsvied at the end of Disenchanted.
The Battle of Brandsveid brought together every king and nobleman in the land in an epic struggle for the future of the Land of Dis, as the armies of the Six Kingdoms united against the monstrous army of Lord Brand. It was the event Vergil, a knight in the service of the Order of Avaress, had waited for his entire life. Unfortunately, he slept through it. In fact, thanks to an accident involving some magic powder, Vergil slept through the next 100 years as well, finally awakening in a world irrevocably changed by the outcome of that epic battle.
Finding himself suddenly an old man, Vergil must try to navigate this strange new world with only the help of his slightly dim but well-meaning servant, Handri. Despite the peaceful, civilized veneer of modern-day Dis, Vergil is convinced that a great evil still threatens the land, and he and Handri set about to uncover and vanquish it. But Vergil's prejudices and chivalric principles prove worse than useless in this strange new world, and he succeeds only in getting himself deeper and deeper in trouble while stirring up simmering animosities between goblins and humans. Can Vergil separate illusion from reality and uncover the true threat to Dis before it's too late?
Disillusioned Land of Dis Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Kroese Phil Gigante Audible Studios Books
As the third book in Kroese's loosely-connected trilogy, Disillusioned is the weakest of the Dis books, but still more than worth a read. The story mixes elements of Don Quixote and Rip Van Winkle in the sarcastic and frequently allegorical land of Dis. Since this book takes place some time after the original Disenchanted, we see the world progressing into a semi-industrial age with the help of a little narrativium. The broad theme of the book is tolerance, as protagonist Vergil has to fight both nefarious elements in the city and his own deep-seated prejudice in order to understand his changed world. While the narrative is never kind or forgiving to intolerance, it's nonetheless a fresh take on a character whose views are antiquated and incompatible with the society he's thrust into. It makes me understand (if not sympathize with) the way my grandparents' often racist or sexist views are so intractable to members of their generation.
While the characters and action aren't quite as engaging as in Distopia, the knight errant is still entertaining as he more or less stumbles his way to the conclusion. As with all of Kroese's books the story progresses quickly and evenly, making for an easy and enjoyable read.

Disillusioned Land of Dis Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Kroese Phil Gigante Audible Studios Books Reviews
enjoyable read
Dis Enchanted remains my favorite of the Dis books, by far. It made me laugh throughout.
A rare "miss" for Kroese. Meaning it's not my favorite but still better than most. If you've read the other Dis books then give this one a shot.
Oh such a puny story full of self-aware adventure story tropes and yet one of the most enjoyable reads I have had in quite some time; after the slow build up which nearly had me throw in the towel. But so glad that I didn't. Dragons just have a way of making everything better.
Probably the best of the Dis series. Old hero wakes after enchanted sleep to find hes A) poor and B) seen as kind-of a racist villain for his perfectly normal (in his day) view of goblins.
Way to go!
Like the other books in the Dis series, this one shares an environment rather than a continuing plot. The humor is still there, although perhaps not quite so broad. For me, at least, this was a good read.
Our hero Vergil is Rip Van Winkle who after being asleep for a hundred years wakes up into a modern world. A world where humans and monsters co-exist. This story tries to have both ways. A funny con the old man / county hick story versus a modern day political satire cloaked in a fantasy theme. Just as the con is getting funny the political satire hammers the reader. And as the political satire is getting good the old mad shuffles into the scene. The time is off. And the humor is not for me.
