In 1856, Isabella Bird published this lively account of her trip to America. She entertainingly describes the difficulties and surprises of her travels by sea from England to Halifax and by road to Boston, Cincinnati, and Chicago, and the energy and diversity of American society.
“Most assuredly that spirit of envious rivalry and depreciating criticism in which many English travelers have written, is greatly to be deprecated, no less than the tone of servile adulation which some writers have adopted; but our American neighbors must recollect that they provoked both the virulent spirit and the hostile caricature by the way in which some of their most popular writers of travels have led an ungenerous onslaught against our institutions and people, and the bitter tone in which their newspaper press, headed by the Tribune, indulges towards” -Isabella L. Bird, The Englishwoman in America
"A candid and kindly account of America, by a lady who went thither with good introductions, and had every possible opportunity of being well informed. Her volume is remarkable for its quiet, sensible tone, its abundance of information upon social topics, and its freedom from all tendency to over-statement. An excellent account of our Canadian colonies forms part of its contents." -Examiner
"An adventurous lady traveler....While on her travels, she from time to time sent home letters describing what she saw and did, and from such materials most of her books have been compiled." -The World-wide Encyclopedia and Gazetteer
"She resolved to make her wanderings a benefit to the people among whom she might sojourn....She possesses a hidden store of nervous vitality which carries her through her undertakings. Above all, she has an indomitable courage and will power, and a spirit which seems to exemplify the verse, 'As thy days so shall thy strength be.'" -The Churchman

Isabella Lucy Bird Bishop (1831-1904), Englishwoman and first woman elected to the Royal Geographical Society, vividly relates in this book her excursion to mid 19th century America. The account was first published in 1856 when the U.S., not one hundred years old, was self consciously flexing its muscles and proclaiming itself the greatest nation in the world.Miss Bird admits that she came to America to dispel many of the prejudices which had been instilled in her by those travelers who had gone before her. In speaking of the "Yankees" she relates, "We know they are famous for smoking, spitting, "gouging", and bowie-knives...for monster hotels, steamboat explosions, railway collisions, and repudiated debts."
Miss Bird frankly likes much of what she sees. She openly admires the bustling cities with their friendly inhabitants, the miles of virgin forests, the awe-inspiring mountains, and the beautiful lakes and streams. She is dismayed and disturbed, however, by slavery, neglect of the Indian, and growing commercialism and materialism.
This humorous and incisive book has none of the jargon usually associated with "travel books." It is a vivid and forceful picture of a rapidly changing America...the growth of its cities, its manufacturing, its agriculture, and its educational system. The reader is given a clearly focused portrait of a vigorous new nation attempting to reconcile Eastern sophistication with Western crudeness; Southern slave-holding attitudes with Northern abolitionism.
Miss Bird's book is also a social commentary; wherever she travels she is interested in learning more of the attitudes and beliefs of the people she meets. Numerous anecdotes from all levels of society enliven her narrative and illustrate undeniably that she was a preceptive, unprejudiced observer.
This trip, which took Mrs. Bishop to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the United States was the first of many which distinquished her as a widely renowned traveler and author. Her journeys to the Orient resulted in three books and a later visit in 1873 to the U.S. was recounted in A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains.

The Englishwoman in Americaby Isabella Lucy Bird
Amazing book of travel in the late 1800s via the sea and still be able to bring memories of my travel to America
in 1965 on board the Queen Mary before she was 'retired' to Long Beach.
The book describes the food, the activities on board ship, the embarkation and disembarkation, the last view of the English countryside and the unbelievable joy of seeing the Statute of Liberty. (oops! that was my feelings in 1965)
It could also could be a reminder of some of the cruises you may have been on. If you like ship travel or just like to travel you will enjoy.
This is a wonderful book to have in your collection. Look up Isabella Lucy Bird's other books as well, you won't be disappointed.
My only regret at 63 years old is that I didn't keep a journal of my immigration to America. I still have the menu's of that trip and the daily activities booklets, and even passenger list. Now if I could just remember all the details -)
Mary Ann (forgive me if I didn't give the review correctly) still learning the ropes.
