Winesburg, Ohio is a 1919 short story cycle by the American author Sherwood Anderson. The work is structured around the life of protagonist George Willard, from the time he was a child to his growing independence and ultimate abandonment of Winesburg as a young man. It is set in the fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio.
Winesburg, Ohio is known as one of the earliest works of Modernist literature. Well received by critics despite some reservations about its moral tone and unconventional storytelling. Though its reputation waned in the 1930s, it has since rebounded and is now considered one of the most influential portraits of pre-industrial small-town life in the United States.

This book is a series of inter-related short stories that reads like a novel. It is filled with strange, sad, unique characters. I first read this book for a literature class in college and enjoyed it then. Re-reading it forty years later for a book club made me realize it had affected me then and I could remember details and characters I thought long forgotten. The characters, descriptions, mood all came rushing back after all those years. It evokes sadness and loss yet offers hope for uniqueness and in the uniqueness of the individual . The character studies are fascinating, the mood is vividly portrayed and the descriptive language is absorbing. The characters and situations stick in my mind and I find myself randomly thinking about a scene or a character. I think that is a sign of an excellent book. I don't think you'll ever read another book like it and it proved to be a great discussion book for the book club. It is on many lists of the Top 100 books of the 20th Century.Product details

Winesburg Ohio [Annotated] edition by Sherwood Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I think this author was a genius to write these stories.
One of my all-time favorite books. I love Anderson's "grotesques."
A great one, I'd say. If I were younger and more sad, I'd probably like it even more.
I think all communities have their fringe-types, though not so homogeneously as presented here.
Anderson is,able to evoke vivid images through beautiful language. The reader can see the old town of Winesburg during the county fair as George and Helen sit in the waning fall light... The hopes, and fears of the young townspeople, the disappointment and frustration of the older folk are palpable through his words. I highly recommend it.
